The Serpentine Gallery’s Summer Pavilion for 2007 recently opened, so yesterday I went along to check out the ‘spinning top’. Designed by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and Norwegian architect Kjetil Thorsen the structure is an awesome dynamic timber clad building. A wide spiralling gradual ramp leads you twice up and around the pavilion to a small platform at the top with a view across Kensington Gardens and down into the seating area of the pavilion. Open till November this year’s summer pavilion is a great temporary addition to London’s architectural landscape and a must-see.

I am a big fan of Diller Scofidio + Renfro so I went to see the new building for the ICA that opened in December. Immediately on the waterfront, it takes your breath away with the sweeping staircase and internal gallery space on the 4th floor that is floor to ceiling glass onto Boston Harbour. I also discovered a new talent – Josiah McElheny, who lives in Brooklyn, but was born in Boston and is an artist and sculptor known for his work with glass blowing. The exhibition on Philip Lorca diCorcia is what left the lasting impression. It includes over 100 of his prints – I do not remember a photographer who has impressed me more.

Wahaca

Last week my team and I paid a visit to Wahaca, the much anticipated new Mexican restaurant in Covent Garden. Wahaca is inspired by the colourful and bustling marketplaces of Oaxaca in Mexico and you can certainly both see and taste this. Far from the Tex Mex we are so used to in Europe, Wahaca embraces the true nature of the Mexican dish, without a cheese laden nacho in sight we were treated to fantastic dishes which successfully married authentic Mexican ingredients with fresh, locally sourced produce. With speedy service and a varied menu Wahaca is definitely worth a visit.

On a recent visit to Boston, I made time for a fleeting visit to The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. A private art collection within what feels like an intimate Venetian Palace, has a central courtyard that is carefully curated, including a Medusa mosaic and sculpture of Horus. I re-discovered the Spanish Cloister and at the end is the mesmorizing canvas by John Singer Sargent, of El Jaleo. I managed to stay until it closed, grabbed my suitcase and headed straight for the airport.
