We felt like Alice in Wonderland when we wandered into the beautiful courtyard of Somerset House for the opening party of the London Festival of Architecture, and found it full of giant furniture. Described as London’s Largest Living Room, the courtyard was full of outsize pieces, from sofas to standard lamps, designed by Studio Weave, with a pattern by Eley Kishimoto. Luckily the champagne and sausages that were served were normal size. Our new mayor Boris addressed the crowd with gusto with his trenchant views on London architecture. Don’t expect lots of towers.
Skin and Bones explores the growing overlap between fashion and architecture, the basic idea is that both buildings and clothing are a means to protect the body, but this exhibit discusses how designers and architects have gone further utilising today’s advances in technology and fabrics. Several designers really stand out in communicating this message such as Hussein Chalayan with the convertible skirt/table and Shigeru Ban Architects with the Curtain Wall House in Tokyo. It is amazing to think what we could be wearing or living in, in a few years time.
After reading all the hype about Alan Yau’s latest creation, we had to give it a try! Upon entering, one has the opportunity to view the kitchen through a pink glass pane before entering into a lovely warm space that could be described as a louche Wagamama. The friendly staff are dressed in t-shirts that say Take Me to the Moon and the food is delivered hot and fresh. At £3.50 a plate, it’s definitely not one to miss!
Torino has been appointed the first World Design Capital. Design Torino came to London to unveil the projects which will be running throughout the year. Designers Martino Gamper and Moritz Waldemeyer and consultant Stefano Mirti presented the calendar of events. Design Torino has placed a special focus on functional product design and public design including community projects. At the conference Gamper spoke about his project with a local bottled water company in which a group of students from the RCA re-designed an aspect of the company’s identity.
I can not remember the last time I went to an exhibit that was so interesting, fun and exciting. Ten artists have been given their own space to transform how they wish both inside and out at the Hayward Gallery for its 40th anniversary summer show. I don’t want to give too much away as every room was a complete surprise for me and I loved it, but my favourite was the exploding room. The exhibition runs until August 25th
