The Michael Hoppen Gallery in Chelsea is paying homage to the photographers who revolutionised the genre of fashion photography. The display, coinciding with London Fashion Week, celebrates the work of photographers like Martin Munkasci, Man Ray and William Klein. These artists left behind the dull and closely-monitored style shoots of the 1930s to challenge expectations while staying within the confines of their brief. This powerful exhibition shows how these photographers merged the rigid boundaries between art and fashion to produce some of the most enduring and iconic fashion images from the 20th century.

Flock by ICA

Last Friday evening I put on my dancing shoes and headed down to Trafalgar square to take part in the ICA installation Flock inspired by Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. Flock was specially commissioned by the ICA, choreographed by Tom Sapsford and designed by digital media artists KMA. A thermal imagining camera, which registered people’s physical presence, was positioned above the square and as people moved around ghostly dancers followed them. The area was filled by an eerie light and enchanting music, drawing people to come and join in the pirouettes, it was great to see strangers and friends all connected in the same fantasy.

Mention the word graffiti and most people think of vandalism and defacement, but at the Sartorial in Notting Hill graffiti is akin to art. All of the artists featured in the exhibition, appropriately titled Artistic Vandals II, discovered their love for art through graffiti. The gallery is small but the work is eye-catching, colourful, attention-grabbing goodness that you’re unlikely to see anywhere else. While the work may look more like something you’d find on the side of a building in Newham than in the V&A, it’s fascinating nonetheless.

Posted by Heloise Syme 02 Feb Mocoto

This week I went to check out the newly opened Brazilian Bar/Restaurant in Knightsbridge Mocoto – designed by San Paolo architects Isa Weinfeld. Walking up the steps into the bar area I walked past typically Brazilian rustic tiled tables, dark wooden chairs with ‘chica’ multicolored cloth covers, even a few banana leaves and a vast range of old cachca bottles. Strong Caipirinhas featured very strongly on the drinks menu. With all this you get the sensation of having been transported to the sunshine right in the middle of Knightsbridge. Add the chilled-out music and the soft evening lighting and your day’s troubles quickly fade away. Having arrived on my own and a little early in the evening. I was kept entertained by the huge variety of magazines displayed in a specially designed magazine rack which stretched the width of the room of this memorable bar.

Posted by Marcus Rosengren 02 Feb The Goya Club

Judy has been tracking Lichtvision for a while and when Christopher came in to see us on one of his trips we fell in love with this project at The Goya Club in Berlin. Designed by Kollhoff Architects it is a contemporary nightclub etc. built into a massive, 100-year-old theater in West Berlin, focuses on the juxtaposition of ‘new’ and ‘old’. Modern, colour-changing LED cove lighting is layered against cast glass fittings along the perimeter and opulent Venetian glass chandeliers suspended over the dance floor in the centre of the room. Each evening a bespoke cable system concealed above the ceiling lowers the chandeliers to the floor so that they can be individually fit with freshly lit candles to set the mood for the night.
